In this paper which is one of a series of papers on 5G, Graham Friend and Steve Hobbs discuss the strategic, technical and valuation considerations associated with assessing 5G spectrum prices in the 26 and 28 GHz range. Spectrum in the 26 and 28 GHz range has been identified as potentially key bands in realising the 5G spectrum vision. With 5G spectrum auctions already taking place and many more planned, telecoms operators are already facing the challenges of 5G spectrum valuation. Yet 5G technology is still in its infancy and there is a lot of ground to cover to establish how the technology will be put to use in practical terms. Establishing 5G spectrum values in a climate of such uncertainty has echos of the early days of mobile when similar uncertainty existed in relation to coverage, customers, services and revenue.
